Gettin' Your Kicks on Route 66

Nat King Cole recorded Bobby Troup's song "Get Your Kicks on Route 66" in 1946, which featured lyrics describing various towns along the route. The early 60s featured a "Route 66" TV series.

Now, in preparation for its 100th anniversary in 2026, parts of the historic highway are getting much-needed upgrades.

Government-funding has been awarded to the state of Illinois–home to 300 miles of the highway–for preservation, education, tourism, and will support architectural pylons, electric vehicle charging stations, and murals.

Oklahoma also received federal funding from the National Scenic Byways program. The funds will be used to make travel safer for cyclists with better accessibility and support local businesses along scenic byways across the country.
